Short answer. Choose a team building program by starting with the problem you want to fix, then check the trainer’s credentials, safety approach, debrief time, group-size fit, what is and is not included in the price, and whether the program is HRD Corp claimable for your company.
A good team building day is remembered for the right reasons. A bad one is remembered for the wrong ones. This checklist helps HR teams compare providers before booking.
1. Name the problem first
Write one sentence about what you want to change. "People do not speak up in meetings" needs a different program than "two departments do not trust each other" or "we want to say thank you after a hard year". A provider who asks about this before quoting is a good sign.
2. Check who will actually facilitate
- Ask for the facilitator’s training and industry background.
- Look for relevant certifications, such as HRD Corp accreditation, first aid training in psychological health, and a sport climbing certification if climbing is involved.
- Ask how many years they have spent in both operations and training.
3. Ask how safety and learning are designed together
Activities should come with gear, guidance and a clear briefing. Ask what happens if someone does not want to take part, and how the facilitator makes sure no one is embarrassed.
4. Match the program to the group size
Some formats work for five people and fail at a hundred. Ask for the minimum and maximum group sizes and what changes at each end.
5. Read the inclusions line by line
- Are entry fees, meals and equipment included?
- Is transport included? Is accommodation?
- Are merchandise or banners part of the price?
- What is the cost per person once everything is added up?
6. Look for reflection time
The game is the hook. The debrief is the value. If the schedule has no time to talk about what happened and what to change at work, the day will be fun and forgettable.
7. Confirm HRD Corp eligibility
Break It Training programs are HRD Corp claimable and delivered by an HRD Corp accredited trainer. Claim eligibility depends on your own company’s registration and the current HRD Corp rules, so confirm the process with your finance or HR team before the event.
8. Ask about accessibility
Good providers plan for different abilities from the start. We provide accessibility support for all our guests, so let us know what your people need.
