How to speak up at work: five practices that build confidence

Short answer. To speak up with more confidence, practise in low-stakes settings first, prepare one sentence before meetings, ask questions as an entry point, build relationships before you need to disagree, and ask your manager for a safe way to raise concerns. Teams improve faster when leaders make it safe to be wrong.

Many people are afraid to speak up, especially in front of others. It is rarely a lack of ideas. It is the sense that being wrong will cost something. Here are five practices that help, with a note for managers at the end.

1. Practise where the stakes are low

Speak first in a small group before you try in a big meeting. Confidence is a habit built on repetitions, and the early ones should be easy.

2. Prepare one sentence

Before a meeting, write one sentence you intend to say. It does not need to be brilliant. Having it ready lowers the cost of starting.

3. Use a question as the door

"Can I check I understood the timeline?" is a real contribution and a gentler start than a disagreement. Many strong opinions begin as questions.

4. Build relationships before you need them

It is easier to disagree with someone you have had a coffee with. Ask a colleague about their work this week. Trust is made of small ordinary conversations.

5. Agree on a way to raise concerns

Ask your manager how they prefer to hear bad news: in the room, in a message, or in a one-to-one. Knowing the safe route makes using it easier.

A note for managers

People copy what leaders reward. Thank the person who raises a problem. Admit your own mistakes in front of the team. Silence in a meeting is information, not agreement.

Why hands-on activities help

In a workshop, speaking up is part of the game, so nobody is singled out. People discover they can say "I need help" while holding a rope, and the habit carries over. Our sessions build confidence through fun, hands-on activities like wall climbing and group sharing.
